The Department of Medical Education and Research, Maharashtra has mooted a proposal in which Medical students aspiring for post-graduate courses will no longer have to appear for an entrance examination. Students' MBBS marks will be considered for admitting them to the master's programme. The decision is likely to be accepted by the Maharashtra state government.

According to Medical Council of India, students can be admitted to post-graduate courses on the basis of an entrance exam conducted by the central government or the state government or on the basis of the MBBS aggregate if a particular state has one medical university. Maharashtra has 10 government colleges and three civic colleges in Mumbai that offer a host of post-graduate courses. Admission to these colleges is conducted after a post-graduate medical entrance examination.

The proposal was under consideration and the state would soon go ahead and decide when it could start implementing this. The aspiring students will be informed in advance.

Petition to Seek Common PG Medical Entrance

Recently there have been also demands coming up from other states' student bodies for common PG entrance test like that of medical undergraduate entrance tests.

A petition has been also submitted in Gujarat High Court by the Medical, Dental and Paramedical Students' Parent Association seeking common PG Entrance Test. HC has sent notices to the state government and six universities of the state.

The association is demanding a common entrance test for the 500 odd PG seats in state. Currently, all the universities conduct their own entrance tests. The Association claims 90% of medical students are in favour of a common test.

A single admission system, like that in the under graduate medical and engineering courses, can benefit the students in many ways. The students will not have to waste money filling up different forms, there will be uniformity not only in admissions but also in the course curricula that various universities follow.
