The repercussions on the recent attacks on Indian students are being felt by Australian universities. And this can be perceived by a dip of 5.5% in the applications this year for the July session. With more than 20,000 Indian students enrolling into Australian universities every year, loss of applications volume from the Indian subcontinent would be a heavy loss for Australian universities.
To improve the country's image and level the anxiety of students and parents alike, Universities Australia (a group that represents 38 Australian universities) have proposed a 10-point action plan for student safety. Developed by the deputy and pro vice-chancellors of Universities Australia, the action plan stresses on stronger law enforcement and better co-operation between universities, government, police and community representatives in order to make Australia a safe haven for international students.
As part of the action plan, the universities will look to:
- More proactive measures to assure the safety of Indian students
- Increased security through active collaboration with local law enforcement authorities
- Work jointly with Australian government and diplomatic mission to streamline and improve existing reporting processes regarding student safety
- Ensure availability of affordable and secure accommodation for Indian students
- Advice travel concession for all students to ensure safety while travelling
- Encourage employer and union support for safe travel conditions for student workers
