The repercussions on the recent attacks on Indian students are being felt by Australian universities. And this can be perceived by a dip of 5.5% in the applications this year for the July session. With more than 20,000 Indian students enrolling into Australian universities every year, loss of applications volume from the Indian subcontinent would be a heavy loss for Australian universities.

A 'BITS-HP Labs India PhD Fellowship' has recently been announced by HP Labs India in collaboration with Birla Institute of Technology and Science - Pilani (BITS-P). The intention is to advance relevant research in India in the areas of information and communication technologies. Chosen candidates can pursue three years PhD research with BITS, Pilani. During the period of study, candidates will have access to the HP Labs India facilities in Bangalore.

Great news for International students: New work permit allows students to stay 3 years after study in Canada

The Canadian government has become more flexible in its work permit policy. International students can now stay in Canada for three years after their studies to search for suitable employment. This means that foreign students are now eligible to an open work permit during this period without the requirement of a job offer and no restriction on the type of employment.

IIM-C hikes fees by Rs 5 Lac, doubles scholarship

The Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) has more than doubled its fees to Rs 9 Lac for over 400 students for the 2009-11 academic session, while doubling the scholarship fund from Rs 75 Lac to Rs 1.50 Crore per year.

Maharashtra to Scrap PG Medical Entrance Test

The Department of Medical Education and Research, Maharashtra has mooted a proposal in which Medical students aspiring for post-graduate courses will no longer have to appear for an entrance examination. Students' MBBS marks will be considered for admitting them to the master's programme. The decision is likely to be accepted by the Maharashtra state government.

IGNOU to offer Associate Degree Programme

Indira Gandhi National Open University is soon going to offer an associate degree through community colleges. This is good news for those who dropped out of school or who could not continue studies due to some reason but now want to study and get regular university degree. The initiative by IGNOU will help such students to re-enter the university system. The academic council of the university has approved the programme and within five months, the university will start offering associate degree programmes to those studying in community colleges.

Cambridge announces scholarship for Indian students

The University of Cambridge announced a new scholarship programme for Indian students in the name of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is also an alumnus of the university. Around 1.5 million pounds have been invested for supporting ten "Manmohan Singh undergraduate scholars". Prime Minister Manmohan Singh graduated from Cambridge with a first in Economics in the late 1950s.

25% quota for “poor & meritorious” in engineering

Karnataka government and private medical and engineering colleges have announced a fixed seat sharing formula for the benefit of poor and meritorious students appearing for engineering and medical entrance test in the state for the academic year 2009-2010.

As against the last year's engineering seat matrix of 55:45 where 55% was with the government, the seat sharing ratio will be now 50:50. The private colleges agreed to the decision while in medical stream, the new seat matrix will be 42:58 with the government getting 42% of the seats, as against the last year's 40:60.

Bangalore, called the Silicon Valley of the East produces about 25,000 engineers every year but to the dismay of many about 30% of the lot produced is not skilled enough to be employed. No Upper Age Limit for WBJEE

Bringing a major sign of relief for thousands of students appearing in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) in 2009, the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEEB) has decided to do away with the upper age limit for candidates appearing in the WBJEE.

Any student above the age of 17 years can appear in the JEE examination. There will be no upper age limit except for the Marine Engineering course for which the upper age limit is 20 years.
