The agitated students smashed furniture after hearing of the government's decision to de-recognize 44 deemed universities across the country. The move follows a review  which found the institutions failed to comply with the requisite standards.

Nearly two lakh students are pursuing higher studies in these 44 institutions in 13 States which have been recommended for non-continuation of the deemed status. They  include three government-sponsored institutes, including the Nava Nalanda in Bihar, the National Museum Institute of the History of Art, Conservation and Museology in  Delhi, and the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development in Sriperumbudur in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

The students are worried about their future, however, the authorities assured that government's intention is not to put any student in problem.

"We will take care of all students who are in those 44 universities. The government's intention is to make sure not a single child will be affected," said federal  Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal.
