Criteria for short listing - PGP Admissions 2009
The selection to the PGP programme of IIM Kozhikode is a multi stage process which starts with the common admission test (CAT). The following describes the procedure used for short listing and further selection of candidates for the 2009 batch. Candidates meeting the minimum cut offs in each section as well as in the aggregate are selected to form an initial pool. From this pool, an index score is computed with 90% weight for the overall CAT score and 10% weight for the work experience of the candidate. Based on this index, candidates are called for Group Discussion and Interview.
After the Group Discussion and Interview, again a final score is computed with 55% weight for the overall CAT score, and 45% for the Group Discussion and Interview together. The final selection is based on the rank obtained by the candidate on this score.

Analysis
IIM Khozikhode has used two criteria for Personal Interview calls.
- CAT Score
- Prior Work Experience
Intrepretation:
- IIM-Kozikhode has given very high (90%) weight to CAT score.
This is very significant. As there is no weight assigned to any previous academic background, a student with mediocre performance in the past still have equal chances for CAT call vis a vis a academic topper. So, if a student has just started taking his studies seriously, he/she still have a chance to make to an IIM. - Like IIM L and IIM K, some weight (10%) to work experience means that fresher's have lesser chances to enter vis a vis students with work experience with same CAT performance.
- Considering only CAT score can also mean that one day wonders can enter IIM K which is not in favour of consistent performers.
To summarise, Studyplaces believe that IIM Kozikhode is following the book. CAT was introduced as a generic test for IIM selections and it is using only that as a first step. This procedure doesn't put any weight to any academic performance. So a student who never considered Academics to be the only way to succeed in life (National player cricket player etc) has a fair chance to enter an IIM. Also, a long shot can be that this batch should produce maximum entrepreneurs. The addition of work experience criteria would ensure that the above student is working for last 2-5 years so that he is better equipped to grasp management principles.
