The National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) was established in1999. It is permanently affiliated to the Bar Council of India. The Hon’ble Chief Justice of India is the Chancellor of NUJS and is also the Chairman of its highest governing body, the General Council. NUJS strives to pursue holistic legal education in order to prepare its graduates for the diverse worlds of litigation, corporate legal practices, academia and legal research. Due emphasis is given to clinical legal education in order to equip the students with knowledge, skill and values to promote social justice through law.

The University offers five-year integrated B.A. / B.Sc. LL.B (Hons.), and two-year LL.M programmes. Besides, the M.Phil, Ph.D and LL.D programmes in law are also taught. NUJS aims at promoting an inter-disciplinary study of law in relation to management, technology, international cooperation and development. The institute has organized itself into a number of Schools and Centers of study, each independent in terms of conception and operation, yet integrated through programmes of teaching, research and extended activities. Modern technology is an integral part of the teaching methodology to make the study programmes innovative and thought provoking. Students themselves have the distinction of regularly publishing two journals, one quarterly and one annual, featuring contemporary legal thought.

In addition to writing end-semester examinations, each student has to compulsorily prepare project papers on select topics. To help students through this taxing schedule, NUJS has an excellent faculty. To augment faculty efforts, the University has entered into agreements with a number of premier institutions of International repute, aimed at gaining academic inputs from outstanding teachers as guest faculty on a sustainable basis. The University has also built up a Scholarship Fund, proceeds from which are disbursed to students every year on need basis.

Located at a prime area in the Salt Lake City of Kolkata, the University Campus has one academic and three residential blocks. The academic block is named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. It has everything a modern university ought to have - a host of class rooms, seminar halls, conference rooms, and a well-stocked air-conditioned library with access to internet, printing and photocopying. LAN service is extended to most of the rooms in the hostels

Physical infrastructure at NUJS also includes an on-campus Bank, a canteen, state-of-the-art kitchens at the hostels. Health care, sports and recreational facilities help students relax. there are many cultural societies operating within the University, which provide students with a creative outlet.

The NSUJ library is one of its kinds. The library subscribes to a large number of periodicals and journals. It is well-equipped with a substantial collection of CD-ROMS, and access to legal databases such as SCC, Grand Jurix, and Manupatra Online.
