The Annamalai University was founded and established in 1929 by the benevolence
of the generous philanthropist and visionary, late Hon'ble Dr. Rajah Sir
Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad, Kt, LL.D., D.Litt. After him, his eminent son
Padma Bhushan Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad, was the
Pro-Chancellor from 1948 to 1984 and he sedulously nurtured the progress and
expansion of the University. At present, Dr.M.A.M. Ramaswamy, another great
sport- patron and humanitarian, is the Pro-Chancellor. The University, since its
foundation, has been serving as a unitary, teaching and residential university.
Over the past seventy eight prosperous years, the University has made tremendous
advancements and established itself as a unitary and built-up University. It’s

The University’s “Directorate of Distance Education” was established in 1979 and
has successfully offering three hundred and eighty-one different programmes of
study under the Regular Stream and is accredited with the largest conscription
in India. The infrastructure is well equipped with computer and ample teaching
Faculty and Administrative unit, study centres, computer training centres and so
on, to dish up the student's customers in their best interest at their door
steps. The University has the credit of providing Postgraduate Degree Programmes
in Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Applied Psychology, Bioinformatics and
Law through Distance Education mode for the first time in India. The
Directorate, with a view to facilitate the students to acquire TWO degrees in
just FOUR years with a noteworthy spotlight on Information Technology education,
has introduced the Dual Degree System. Programmes are also being provided on
Textile Design, Twinning Programme, Programmes on Health Science, Commonwealth
Youth Programme, Fashion Design, Interior Design, Hotel Management and Catering
Technology Programmes, Yoga, Music and Film & Television Technology Programme.
