Charles Darwin University was established in 1951 as the University offering the territory’s first adult education classes where supervised study classes were provided for apprentices, as well as typing, shorthand, French and subjects for public service examinations. Earlier known as the Northern Territory University, it came to be known by its present name in the year 2003 after its merger with the Alice Springs’ Centralian College becoming the only Australian university to offer the full spectrum of education options from senior secondary through to Vocational Education Training, undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs. The University offers a fresh approach to training, education, research and knowledge application and aspires to be recognized internationally as a centre of excellence in Indigenous and cross cultural knowledge, tropical knowledge and desert knowledge.

Jabiru campus

Located in the heart of Kakadu National Park, Charles Darwin University's Jabiru centre provides vocational education and training (VET), for Jabiru and the surrounding areas of Arnhem Land and Kakadu. The Kakadu National Park is listed as a World Heritage site. The surroundings provide a scenic and tranquil environment for the pursuit of knowledge.

The University offers many varied subjects for study, covering areas from agriculture to computers. These include conservation and land management, information technology, community services, business, horticulture, and general education. The course structure is very flexible. In most cases, students can choose to study internally, externally, or as a mixed mode student. Tourism and hospitality training; numeracy and literacy courses are also available.

The Jabiru centre is situated in a posh area of the town. Classrooms, staffrooms and the students’ common room are air-conditioned, and although the centre has no student accommodation, there are alternatives for students in the vicinity of the town. The Faculty and Staff are very supportive. Students are not only provided with education, but also complete assistance and guidance.
