Established in 1794 as King's College, Columbia University in the City of New York is the oldest higher education institute in New york and fifth oldest in the United States. Founded by royal charter of King George II of England, the University celebrated it 250th anniversary in 2004 and is popularly known as just Columbia University. Today, it has two principal campuses - Morningside Heights campus with its historic and neoclassical environment and Medical Center, situated in Washington Heights, with its modern environment.
Famous as one of the top academic and research institutions in the world, it hosts three undergraduate schools, a school of continuing education and thirteen higher learning institutes. It is reputed for its research work in the fields of medicine, science, the arts and the humanities. Morningside Heights

Situated on the upper west side of Manhattan, the Morningside Heights campus is easily accessible by public transportation or car. It houses the three undergraduate schools—Columbia College, the School of General Studies and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Continuing Education and graduate and professional schools for various fields such as Architecture, Art, Law, Journalism, Arts and sciences, Business, International Affairs and Social Work.
Students can avail of the free shuttle bus service between the Morningside Heights and Medical Centre campus. More than 45,000 visitors come to the Visitors Center annually and campus tours and information tours are organized for prospective students and tourists. Non-traditional and returning students can also attend the campus tours and information sessions conducted the School of General Studies. Parking and accommodation facilities are available on campus. However, students may opt for off-campus accommodations. Columbia students and guests can also benefit from discounted rates in some local hotels and hostels.
