Established in 1794 as King's College, Columbia University in the City of New York is the oldest higher education institute in New york and fifth oldest in the United States. Founded by royal charter of King George II of England, the University celebrated it 250th anniversary in 2004 and is popularly known as just Columbia University. Today, it has two principal campuses - Morningside Heights campus with its historic and neoclassical environment and Medical Center, situated in Washington Heights, with its modern environment.
Famous as one of the top academic and research institutions in the world, it hosts three undergraduate schools, a school of continuing education and thirteen higher learning institutes. It is reputed for its research work in the fields of medicine, science, the arts and the humanities. Medical Center

Sprawling on 20 acres. Medical Center campus is situated in the Washington Heights community of northern Manhattan. It absorbs nearly half of Columbia University's $2 billion annual budget and is internationally renowned for its scientific research, health and medical education and patient care. It houses a hospital and eight major schools and colleges - College of Physicians & Surgeons, School of Dental & Oral Surgery, Programs in Occupational Therapy, Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, Institute of Human Nutrition, Mailman School of Public Health, Programs in Physical Therapy and School of Nursing.
Colleges of Physicians & Surgeons and Dental Medicine and schools of Nursing and Public Health have been pioneer of several clinical breakthroughs for fighting diseases and health improvement such as developing the first blood test for cancer, the first successful transfer of genes from one cell to another and the first medical use of the laser. International students can avail services of International Affairs Office (IAO) and GSAS and Public Health students can avail services of nternational Students & Scholars Office (ISSO) situated in this campus.
