Established in 1794 as King's College, Columbia University in the City of New York is the oldest higher education institute in New york and fifth oldest in the United States. Founded by royal charter of King George II of England, the University celebrated it 250th anniversary in 2004 and is popularly known as just Columbia University. Today, it has two principal campuses - Morningside Heights campus with its historic and neoclassical environment and Medical Center, situated in Washington Heights, with its modern environment.

One-third of international students in CU are enrolled in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The other fields that attract most international students are Engineering, Business, Social Sciences and International Affairs. Columbia's American Language program is internationally recognized for instruction in English as a second language. CU hosts 107 Fulbright scholars and also offers full and partial scholarships and fellowship support to the deserving candidates. Columbia University has four affiliated schools - Barnard College, Jewish Theological Seminary, Teachers College and Union Theological Seminary.
