College of Engineering (Main Campus)

Engineering is a fundamentally creative endeavor with a vast array of applications. Engineering, in the form of "mechanic arts," was among the first academic offerings at Cornell. The program quickly made its mark by producing the first electric generator in the United States. The College of Engineering has continued that tradition of innovation by engaging in cutting-edge exploration and development, from nano-engineering and bio-molecular motors to designing earthquake-resistant infrastructure. Its faculty members are leaders in their fields, top-flight researchers and excellent teachers. The college's network of more than 33, 000 alumni work for world-class corporations, universities, research facilities, and government agencies, providing mentorship opportunities, co-op placements, internships, and jobs.

The study of engineering at Cornell is rigorous and comprehensive. All student engineers complete the College of Engineering’s Common or Core Curriculum before selecting a major. Undergraduate engineering students from numerous specialty fields can collaborate on special projects to gain hands-on experience. Research takes place in many laboratories and centers on the Cornell campus, including Duffield Hall, the new state-of-the-art center for nano-technical research, and off-campus in places like Arecibo, Puerto Rico, at the world’s largest radio telescope, and in Maine at the Shoals Marine Laboratory. The college offers majors in the following disciplines:

  • Biological Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Engineering Physics
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Independent Major
  • Information Science, Systems and Technology
