The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) was established as the
first national institute for Post-Graduate studies and Research in Management in
November 1961 in collaboration with Alfred P. Sloan School of Management (MIT),
the Government of West Bengal, The Ford Foundation and Indian Industry. The
Institute imparts high quality management education by playing a
pioneering role in professionalizing Indian management through its Post Graduate
and Doctoral level programs; Executive Training Programs, Research and
Consulting Activities.
The IIMC serves as an autonomous body, continually evolving to meet
its goals, in an ever-changing business environment. The vision of the Institute
is to emerge as an International Centre of Excellence in all facets of
Management Education. The Institute's philosophy has been to develop leadership qualities
through not only classroom teaching and learning, but also equally importantly
through participation in co-curricular activities.One of the biggest strengths of the Institute is its world renowned faculty. The
faculty members have distinguished academic achievements in different areas of
management and related basic disciplines, and are actively involved in
teaching, training, research and consulting.
The dynamic learning process at IIMC enriches the teaching and training
activities of the faculty. They carry out consultancy assignments to keep in
touch with the real-life management problems in public and private corporations,
financial institutions, government agencies and international agencies. It also
helps in development of case studies and identification of directions of
research relevant for business and industry.

faculty office blocks, fully equipped classrooms, seminar and conference rooms,
residential quarters for students, faculty and staff members, library, an
executive training complex, a bank and a post office. A

The campus of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, situated on Diamond Harbour Road, has a cluster of
administrative and
faculty office blocks, fully equipped classrooms, seminar and conference rooms,
residential quarters for students, faculty and staff members, library, an
executive training complex, a bank and a post office. A
state-of-the-art auditorium also forms a part of the campus. The institute’s Bidhan Chandra Roy library houses over 1,50,000 volumes of
books. It also subscribes to several hundred journals and
provides access to a exhaustive collection of electronic databases which provide
information about global and Indian industry.
The main academic block has four spacious air-conditioned lecture halls and
several classrooms with state-of-the-art audio-visual facilities.
The campus has four hostels that provide single room accommodation to students
with modern amenities and recreation facilities along with coffee shops and canteens. Intercom telephones are available in
each hostel room. Students have unlimited access to the internet. A host of
electronic databases like Bloomberg, Prowess and Capitaline providing
information on the global and Indian corporate world are also accessible
likewise. The Tata Hall provides accommodation to executives coming for
the Management Development Program.
The institute has excellent sports facilities, which include volleyball court,
basketball court, a football ground, lawn tennis court, TT rooms and badminton
courts. A state-of-art gym complex and a large swimming pool are also part of
the campus.The main sports meet is the annual IIMC-XLRI meet. There is also the IIM C- STEP sports meet with the students of the
Student Exchange Program, who come from top B-schools across the world. Cultural activities
keep happening around the calendar. Students from business schools across the
country participate in Intaglio, the annual business meet.
Extracurricular activities form an integral part of the student life at IIMC.
Various clubs have been set up for the overall development of the student
personality. They are:
- Colloquia Cell - Top-level practicing managers and distinguished
business leaders present students
with an opportunity to acquire a true picture of present day management issues.
- Dramatics Cell- The Dramatics cell at IIMC is a team of young
dramatists with a passion for theatre.
- Entrepreneurship Cell- This organization is focused on nurturing the
entrepreneurial spirit among the leaders of the future generation. It organizes
'i2i- Ideas to Implementation', an international business plan competition, one of
the largest of its kind in Asia.
- Finance Club- A large
number of students at IIMC have formed an association that forms a stage for
interaction of students, academicians and professionals from the corporate
world. Dhan, its annual magazine, features articles and research publications
from the students themselves.
- Initiative for Community Action (INCA)- It is a platform that helps raise both
students and Non-profit Organizations. While acting as a
means to sensitize students to the socio-economic problems facing a large part
the Indian populace, it also exposes them to real time, on-hand consulting
experiences.
- Marketing Cell- The cell plays a key role in the activities at IIMC, through
organization of case contests, workshops conducted by the leaders in the field,
throughout the year, with the grand finale being the annual marketing fair
Kalpataru.
- The Consulting Club- It is a student-run, corporate-facilitated and
faculty-guided student body of IIMC. Its objective is to benefit the
students' community through consulting events, live industry consulting
projects, seminars, workshops and other student activities.
