IIMA's mission is to help India and other developing countries improve their managerial
practices both in the private and in the public sectors, and adopt superior
public policies. It seeks to do this through producing risk-taking
leader-managers who will pioneer new managerial practices and set new standards,
through producing teachers and researchers who will generate new ideas of
International significance and through purposeful consulting aimed at helping
client organizations scale new heights. Effective governance and quality
education are the critical aspects of the institute. The objectives of the
institute outlined are:
- To provide learning facilities to men and women of exceptional caliber
for pursuing careers in management or becoming teachers and researchers in
different management fields
- To promote knowledge through research, both applied and conceptual,
relevant to management and to disseminate such knowledge through
publications
- To participate in and contribute to the formulation of public policy,
which would provide answers to questions of social importance
- To enhance the decision-making skills and the administrative competence
of practicing managers and assist organizations to solve their managerial
problems by providing them with consulting services based on actual
requirements
- To collaborate with other institutions in India and abroad with a view
to further professionalizing management education and assisting in
institution building, in a meaningful manner
All members of the faculty play an important role in administering the
diverse academic and non-academic activities of the Institute which has been the
propelling force behind the high quality of learning experience at IIM-A. The
institute strives to produce managers who can operate efficiently across the
globe, who can excel in a multicultural environment, and who can negotiate
confidently across cultures. The institute envisions benchmarking itself on a
global scale with the best management education institutions, and becoming the
institution-of-choice for the best students from the most advanced countries in
the world. The Institute has made sustained efforts to bring an international
perspective to all its activities. In the context of the MBA program, the
Institute has encouraged an increasing overseas exposure for its students in
several ways like participation of an increasing number of students in the MBA
programs offered by leading foreign business schools through the international
student exchange program and attracting a large number of foreign students to

as the Manchester of the East. The campus is divided between an old campus of 67
acres and a new campus of 39 acres. The main complex of the institute, The Louis
Kahn Plaza, named after its architect, acts as a major center for interactions
and celebrations amongst the students. It is surrounded on its three sides by

and celebrations amongst the students. It is surrounded on its three sides by
the faculty wing, the library and the classrooms.
The institute also consists of
amphitheatre classrooms and transition spaces to further enhance the interaction
between the faculty and the students. The campus has a wide range of housing
facilities divided into 20 dormitories, each capable of accommodating 25-40
students in independent rooms. Each dorm is equipped with all the basic
amenities required by students. Separate housing facility is available for
married students. The institute’s library is one of the biggest of its kind
aggregating close to 180,000 volumes on management and related subjects, 600
current periodicals, 700 CDs and more than 2000 working papers and
dissertations.
The entire library database is also available on the Institute’s
intranet. The library has set up the 3i network or ‘Information Infrastructure
for Institutions’ to provide business, industry, environmental, agricultural,
and economic information to the users which include both the students and the
faculty. The institute provides its students with state-of-the-art information
technology infrastructure whereby every students and faculty member has a
networked personal computer at his/her disposal. The students have round the
clock internet facility available to them.
Every classroom has a computer
connected to the network that allows faculty to retrieve relevant information
from their desktop or the central database. This connectivity helps both the
students and the faculty considerably in their research and projects. The
institute also inhabits the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Management Development Center
inside its premises. The excellent sports and fitness facilities on the campus
ensure that students can remain fit and healthy to take on the strenuous
academic challenges.
