IIT Bombay, was established in 1958, at Powai, Mumbai. It was established with
the cooperation and participation of the UNESCO, with contribution from the
Govt. of USSR. In 1961, the Institute was declared an institution of national
importance and accorded it the status of a university with power to award its
own degrees and diplomas. Prof. Ashok Misra is the Director of this Institute, a position he took over in May, 2000.

IIT Bombay, was established in 1958, at Powai, Mumbai. It was established with
the cooperation and participation of the UNESCO, with contribution from the
Govt. of USSR. In 1961, the Institute was declared an institution of national
importance and accorded it the status of a university with power to award its
own degrees and diplomas. Prof. Ashok Misra is the Director of this Institute, a position he took over in May, 2000.
Over the years, there has been great progress at IIT Bombay
in all academic and research activities, and a parallel improvement in its
facilities and infrastructure, to maintain its position as one of the best Institutes, not
only in India but throughout the world as well.
The University trains its students to undertake short intensive courses,
conferences and seminars on current technological developments; provides
research and development consultancy required in industries, government and
civic organizations; provides the best possible educational facilities, creative
atmosphere and organizes quality improvement programs and provides a
creative atmosphere in which higher studies and research thrive both amongst the
students and the faculty.
The Institute trains its graduates to become the future
leaders. Thus in the engineering curriculum, besides the professional courses,
the students are also trained in the basic sciences of mathematics, physics and
chemistry and a reasonable knowledge in subjects like economics, english,
philosophy and social sciences. The Institute seeks to establish traditions
which will foster creativity and growth of excellence and contribute to the
industrial development and economic growth of the country by preparing a new
age-group of engineers and scientists, who will provide their quality service to
the technological industry in the years to come.

The 220 hectares campus enjoys good connectivity with the main city through
local trains and buses. Although, student can reach the main city in an hour
through public transport, the campus itself is self- sufficient with a shopping
centre, two banks, two schools and a hospital.
Hostel accommodation is available to the students who want to pursue their
Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral programs from IIT Mumbai. There are 13 hostels
with its independent mess and recreational areas. All hostel operations are
supervised by the students themselves.
