One of the best universities in Australia for tropical research, James Cook University (JCU) was found in Townsville in 1970. It has four campuses - Cairns, Townsville and Brisbane campuses are in Queensland while its international campus is in Singapore. The University also offers courses through Mount Isa, Thursday Island and Mackay education centers and through its partners in the Pacific region and Asia. Listed in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2007 by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University,  James Cook University is one of the 17 Australian universities that have been ranked among top 500 universities of the world.

Douglas Campus (Townsville)

Located in a suburb of Douglas, Douglas campus of James Cook University is about 13 km from the city centre of Townsville and sprawls across 386 hectares of area. Most of the area consists of parkland and natural bush. Currently, around 11,000 students are enrolled here and more than 1,100 students are from abroad. This campus is home to the main library of James Cook University and offers a vibrant and active campus life.Along with student accommodation facilities that house around 1,400 students, the campus is home to several students clubs and societies, restaurants, cafes and bars, a professional theater and fitness and sporting facilities.

Students can also visit the specialty shops, shopping centres and supermarkets situated close to the campus. The largest tropical city of Australia, Townsville has a dry climate with daytime temperature usually between 25 to 30 degree centigrade during, spring (comprising most of the academic years), winter and autumn. It is quite near to the famous Australian attractions -  two hours from the Great Barrier Reef, one hour from the Wet Tropics rainforests of Paluma and historic outback towns. One can easily reach holiday resorts such as the Mission Beach, the Magnetic Island and the Whitsunday islands from Townsville.
