Founded in 1829 by King George IV and the Duke of Wellington (then Prime Minister), King's College London is one of the oldest and largest colleges of the University of London. Following the path of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the only universities in the UK whose royal charter predates that of the King's College, this college has earned a strong academic reputation. Today it offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs through its nine schools of study that run across its five campuses. King's College London has five campuses - Strand Campus, Waterloo Campus, Guy's Campus, St Thomas' Campus and Denmark Hill Campus. It is the biggest education centre for healthcare professionals in Europe and has as many as five Medical Research Council Centres. In the UK, the College enjoys charity exemption from registration under the King's College London Act 1978. Established in the tradition of the Church of England, in Hong Kong, King's College London Hong Kong Foundation is a registered charity. In Canada, King's College London has a charitable status. Under Schedule VIII of the Income Tax Act 2000 and in the US, the Friends of King's College London Association Incorporated has 501(c)3 status. However, the College is open to students and staff from diverse nationalities, ethnicities, religions, faiths and beliefs. King's College had a major share in science contribution of the 19th century and had been active in making higher education accessible for women and working classes and offering evening classes. The College has a glorious history and had made strategic partnerships with several distinguished institutions such as Chelsea College, Institute of Psychiatry, the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals and Queen Elizabeth College. Originally situated at the site south to the London Bridge, St' Thomas's was founded in 1106 and was named after St Thomas Becket. It was rebuilt on Borough High Street. In 1768, St Thomas and Guy's Hospitals made a strategic partnership in offering joint medical education programs by the name of 'The United Hospitals of the Borough'. However, in 1825, the hospitals split apart again. , but they split apart again in 1825. Next year, Guy's Dental School had a merger with the Royal Dental Hospital of London's School of Dental Surgery, laying the foundation for the UMDS (United Medical and Dental Schools) of Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals. King's College of London merged with UMDS only recently in 1998.
