Founded in 1829 by King George IV and the Duke of Wellington (then Prime Minister), King's College London is one of the oldest and largest colleges of the University of London. Following the path of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the only universities in the UK whose royal charter predates that of the King's College, this college has earned a strong academic reputation. Today it offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs through its nine schools of study that run across its five campuses.

With 13,000 undergraduate and 6,200 graduate students enrolled here, King's College has been ranked 24th in the world, 7th in Europe and 6th in the UK by The Times Higher Education in 2007. Denmark Hill Campus

The Denmark Hill Campus houses the King's College School of Medicine and Dentistry and the Institute of Psychiatry. In 1913, the King's College Hospital moved to this campus from Portugal Street in Strand. In 1997, the Weston Education Centre was inaugurated as the purpose-built medical education centre. The Bethlem Hospital, which was perhaps the world's oldest mental hospital, opened up a similar facility in London known as the Maudsley Hospital.

In 1948, the Maudsley's medical school was renamed the Institute of Psychiatry, which had a merger with King's College London in 1997. This institute dealing with acute mental illnesses became a constituent body of the University of London's British Postgraduate Medical Federation. The James Black Foundation here was established by the Nobel Prize-winner Sir James Black for the development of new drugs.
