Macquarie University offers programs in the experimental medical sciences which include biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, genetics, medical chemistry and psychology. Studies in the medical sciences provide a broad range of practical and applied sciences required in the medical, biomedical and related health professions.

Medical sciences can be studied in either the Bachelor of Medical Sciences or the Bachelor of Science. The program for the Bachelor of Medical Sciences is prescribed. In the first year, students must take biology, chemistry, psychology, physics, statistics and mathematics. In the next two years, students choose to specialise in one of three strands (biology, medical chemistry or psychomedical sciences). The Bachelor of Science offers greater subject choice and combinations both in science areas and outside of science.
