The only health and medical research institute of Australia, Menzies School of Health Research (MSHR) is known primarily for its works public health and individual health of people living in tropical regions, remote areas and those belonging to indigenous communities in Australia and abroad. Since 2004, it functions as one of the schools of Charles Darwin University (CDU) Institute of Advanced Studies. With its headquarters in the Royal Darwin Hospital campus in Darwin, MSHR also has a smaller campus in Alice Springs where it shares its premises with the Centre for Remote Health. It also runs a joint research facility in Timika, Indonesia. This facility has been opened in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Indonesian government and is known as the National Institute of Health Research and Development. Involved in over 50 research projects at present, MSHR was established, as a joint endeavour of the University of Sydney, the Menzies Foundation and the Northern Territory Government, in 1985 with an aim to promote scientific excellence in research and education related to health and related areas. An independent research organisation in itself, MSHR is not related to The Menzies Research Centre Ltd and its research work is mostly concentrated at medical research work in northern Australia. MSHR promotes postgraduate research as a research school of CDU and run joint programs with other medical institutes and educational providers in the related fields. The curriculum of MSHR's research-based programs includes laboratory and clinical practice, study of public health projects and intervention studies related to community lifestyles. MSHR is centre agent for the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health, has close links with Flinder University's Northern Territory Clinical School and industry partnerships with health services run by Commonwealth governments, indigenous stakeholders, academic institutions and the Department of Health and Community Services and Aboriginal medical services. Alice Springs CampusMSHR operates a smaller unit at Alice Springs. It shares this premises with the Centre for Remote Health and the National Institute of Health Research and Development, which is a joint research facility with the Ministry of Health of Indonesia, which is based in Timika, Indonesia. The Central Australian Unit based at this satellite site of MSHR is currently developing a research program that focuses on cardiovascular diseases and its effects among Indigenous Australians. It also conducts clinical and community-based work and undertakes projects across Northern Territory.
