Named after prominent Australian Sir John Monash, the Monash University came into existence in 1958. In the decades that have followed, Monash has developed a wide range of courses in arts, commerce, education, engineering, law, medicine and science. The total number of enrolled students presently stands at 50,000. Monash students come from more than 100 countries. There are over 17,000 international students studying at the University.

Monash is a research-intensive university. Research areas include IVF technology; drug development including combating malaria and influenza; ground-breaking accident research; and climate change solutions. A highlight of research came in the year 2000, with a team of scientists led by Professor Alan Trounson announcing to the world that nerve stem cells could be derived from embryonic stem cells. This has resulted in placing Monash among the top 20 universities in the world for biomedicine.
