Southern New Hampshire University was founded in 1932 by Harry A.B. Shapiro as the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Science. The school remained relatively small until 1961, when it was incorporated and renamed New Hampshire College of Accounting and Commerce. The state of New Hampshire in 1963 granted the university its charter, which gave it degree-granting authority. The first associate’s degrees were awarded that year; and the first bachelor’s degrees were conferred three years later. The college became a nonprofit institution under a board of trustees in September 1968 and the name was shortened to New Hampshire College in 1969.

The 1970s were a time of growth and change. In 1971, the college moved from its downtown Manchester site to a new 200-acre campus on the Merrimack River. In 1974, the college introduced a Master of Business Administration program; in 1976, it created a B.S. in Hotel Management; and in...

 

Main Campus

SNHU's 300-acre main campus is situated on the banks of the Merrimack River in Manchester, New Hampshire, one of the fastest-growing cities in New England. The main campus is in New England, only an hour away from the ocean, the White Mountains, and the city of Boston. At the SNHU's Hospitality Center Restaurant one can find fine Caribbean, Middle Eastern, Thai, French, Classical and Mediterranean cuisine in the fine dining atmosphere. SNHU students manage every aspect of the restaurant, from seating to serving to cooking, and even the business side of running a restaurant. The University Library houses a constantly expanding collection that serves as an information resource center for the students, faculty and staff.

Southern New Hampshire University's athletic complex boasts a 5,500 square-foot fitness center containing most modern equipment as well as free weights and a climbing wall. The Fitness Centre comprises an auxiliary gym with a stage to accommodate a variety of university activities. It has a 25-meter six-lane swimming pool with a viewing gallery, a racquetball court, mirrored exercise/dance room, training and equipment room along with lockers and team rooms. As recreational activities, SNHU gives an opportunity to the students to de-stress themselves by engaging in aerobic exercises, cross-country skiing, kickboxing, swimming, tennis, weight training, wall climbing, yoga, and Pilates. Hundreds of hiking trails lead you on relaxing strolls or hardy adventures.
