Officially SU chartered in 1870 as a private coeducational institution offering programmes in the physical sciences and modern languages. Located in Syracuse, New York, the geographic center of the state and approximately 250 miles northwest of New York City, SU is organised into 13 schools and colleges, with nationally-recognised programmes in communications, business administration, public administration and engineering.
Academic programmes: SU offers undergraduate degrees in over 200 majors in the 10 undergraduate schools and colleges. Bachelor's degrees are offered through the Syracuse University School of Architecture, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, the School of Information Studies, Martin J. Whitman School of Management, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, and the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
Also offered are Master's and doctoral degrees from the Graduate School and from specialised programmes in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, College of Law, among others. Additionally, SU offers 24 Certificates of Advanced Study Programmes for specialised programmes for education, counseling, and other academic areas.
Within the school, U.S. News & World Report has ranked the graduate programme as the third best in the United States.
The university has highly trained and experienced full-time instructional faculty (909); part-time faculty (106); and adjunct faculty (447).
Students at Syracuse University represent 50 states and more than 115 foreign countries. Of the total student population, 10 % are from foreign countries.

Syracuse University is situated on 200 acres on a hilltop overlooking downtown Syracuse; the main campus has 170 buildings. The campus is centered on a main quadrangle, often referred to as "the Quad." The 20 residence halls form the outer rim of campus. Students easily walk to class; an average trip takes about five minutes.
