The University of Melbourne - New South Wales, Australia
Building 173
Course Name:Bachelor of Science Course Description:The Bachelor of Science provides a foundational knowledge of the sciences and technology that equips graduates to engage in scientific investigation and contribute to debate on scientific issues. A balance of discipline focus and curriculum breadth provides graduates with a profound understanding of the natural and constructed world. The Bachelor of Science draws on the expertise of leading teachers and researchers from an extensive range of science, technology and engineering systems areas of study. Students develop an appreciation of the historical background and evolution of scientific concepts and technological innovation. The degree leads to a career in science or other careers with a scientific connection. It can also be the first step in the development of a career in engineering or health practice which may be pursued through postgraduate study. In the first year students are required to choose from a range of science and technology subjects that provide a strong foundation on which to build a specialization in later years. Students can choose subjects that provide pathways to a number of different majors. Each graduate completes a major – a specialization in third-year level study that builds on their subject choices in earlier years. Each program of study leading to a major consists of core subjects including theory or laboratory-based learning, recommended subjects and elective units. The degree offers a comprehensive range of majors to students in single disciplines across the spectrum of the sciences, technology and engineering systems, as well as interdisciplinary majors. In the third year of the degree, there is a capstone experience for each major or specialization, which demonstrates how the knowledge and skills developed in the major can be applied in research or a broader science context. In the breadth component of the course, students take subjects from outside the core helping to integrate perspectives from the sciences, humanities and social sciences.
