The University of New England was established in the 1920s and since then has earned the reputation as one of Australia's great teaching, training and research universities. One of the unique features of the university is its distance education program for teaching its off-campus students. UNE is, at present, Australia’s longest continuous provider of distance education with more than 15,000 external students. It provides flexibility to its external study program which helps the students tailor the courses according to their own interests. Students from more than 50 countries study on-campus providing a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

UNE is at the forefront of online learning having more than 12,500 students studying via the Internet. UNE students have access to 600 subjects online that offers greater flexibility for study and a new way of working and communicating with supervisors and fellow students. The University of New England (Main Campus)

The campus of the University of New England is situated on 74 hectares of heritage parklands, overlooking the city of Armidale. All faculties, residences and recreational facilities are set in idyllic surroundings, within easy walking distance from each other. UNE is home to an outstanding learning and research environment, boasting internationally-recognized academics, many high profile Cooperative Research Centers and collaboration with leading research organizations such as CSIRO.

The majority of first-year, on-campus students choose to live in on campus residences, within easy walking distance of lectures and tutorials. In addition to providing food and lodgings, the college offers organized social activities as well as academic and pastoral support networks. The campus is well equipped with its own child-care, medical facilities, a post office, credit union, shops and restaurant, as well as the full range of sporting facilities. A regular bus service links the campus to town.

The university provides a number of recreational facilities and opportunities for students to become involved in a diverse range of interests and activities, including areas such as Astronomy, Film, Drama, Music, Literary, Games, Business, Religion and Media/Broadcasting.
