Course Name

:

BE (Bioinformatics)

Course Description

:

Bioinformatics is an emerging discipline at the convergence of computing and life sciences aimed at development of technologies for storing, extracting, organizing, analyzing, interpreting and utilizing the vast amount of information being generated with the recent developments in genomics and related disciplines. It is an interdisciplinary field. Not only have advances in computing helped accelerate the process of data generation, but the need to process and analyze this vast amount of information has led to advances in both software technologies (databases, algorithm design, machine learning and visualization) and hardware architectures. Additionally, there is considerable interest in bioinformatics from researchers in medicine and mathematics.

The major areas of bioinformatics include:

  • Storage and retrieval of biological data such as nucleic acid and protein sequence and structure
  • Data analysis and mining in areas such as sequence alignment, structural analysis, phylogeny, metabolic pathways and signaling, gene expression
  • Graphical representation of complex biological data
  • High performance computing techniques to support such areas
