In recent times, the University has been ranked amongst the top 40 universities in the world by various sources. The University had 45,182 students and 3,018 (full-time equivalent) academic staff.

The University of Sydney has made for itself an international reputation for outstanding teaching, as a centre of research excellence. It is a member of Australia's ‘Group of Eight’ Australian universities that are highly ranked in terms of their research performance.

Numerous community links have been forged by academic and research disciplines as well as dedicated units such as the Yooroang Garang and Koori Centre, which work closely with Indigenous communities. Worldwide Universities Network (WUN)
The University of Sydney is a member of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN). By fostering and encouraging collaboration between members, WUN brings together the experience, equipment and expertise necessary to tackle the big issues currently facing societies, governments, corporations and education.

Association of the Pacific Rim Universities (APRU)
The University is a partner in a global network of research collaboration and student exchange that spans Europe, North America and Asia. In 2006 the University of Sydney hosted the APRU conference, a key forum to discuss issues of strategic importance to research universities.

Collaborative research projects
The University's academics are involved in collaborative research projects with colleagues overseas, with governments and with other organisations to further knowledge and improve people's lives.
