The University of Sydney - Australia

Course Name

:

Master of Business Information Systems

Course Description

:

The Master of Business Information Systems is designed to meet the needs of students with a pre-existing knowledge of business who want to better understand the contribution Business Information Systems (BIS) can make to their role as a manager within an organisation. The degree is designed to provide students with the flexibility to develop their expertise within, and across, a number of streams to meet their specific career needs and aspirations.

The aim of the Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) is to combine theory and practice to equip graduates with the skill set necessary to effectively manage and derive strategic value from information and information related technologies in both public and private sector contexts. The course covers the complete information systems lifecycle from consideration of the contribution of BIS to business strategy, through the design and implementation of appropriate solutions to the delivery of the associated benefits. The MBIS incorporates an integrative project that requires students to draw together and apply material from the units they have studied.

Admission Process

:

You will be considered for admission to the University of Sydney if you meet our minimum eligibility criteria. The offer of a place also depends upon the number of places available and the quality of those competing for a place.

In general your application will require an acceptable academic qualification demonstrated English language competency (see English language entry requirements). English language test results must be less than 2 years old. Entry grades required for admission are usually detailed on the relevant faculty or department Web pages, and (generally) in each faculty Handbook.

Health and security checks are also required for some courses involving fieldwork in the New South Wales hospital system and education system. You can also check the Faculty websites for more details. If you are applying on the basis of qualifications obtained in another country, your application will be assessed for its equivalence to Australian tertiary entry standards. You may also need to sit an English proficiency test (see below).

If you are facing difficulties with English, either in the classroom or during coursework, academic staff will recommend remedial assistance. You will be expected to use this assistance so that you can perform well and communicate effectively with peers, teachers, school pupils and parents. If you do not hold any of the above qualifications and you need to improve your standard of English before a degree course, English courses are available at the Centre for English Teaching (CET).

If you wish to transfer to an postgraduate program at the University of Sydney from another university or gain credit for your previous study, you can apply for advanced standing or credit. Advanced standing allows you to enter directly into senior units of study but does not reduce the number of units you take in your course. Credit reduces the number of units you take in your course at Sydney. Credit may be granted for approved units of study or for years of study. However, it is usually based on units of study.
