Situated in Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, the University of Canterbury (UC) is home to students from all over the world that contribute to its great student lifestyle and vibrant campus environment. Know for its world-class teaching and research work, this second University in the country of New Zealand was established in 1873 as Canterbury College.
The University is situated in a 76-hectare campus, situated in the suburb of Ilam, 7 km from the Christchurch city centre, where it was previously located at the present-day site of the Christcurch Arts Centre. Surrounded by plush greenery, Ilam Gardens and playing fields, the campus complex houses lecture theatres, laboratories, libraries and staff accommodations. In 2007, the Christchurch College of Education that was New Zealand's second oldest teacher training college merged with in New Zealand, merged with UC to become its sixth School or College.

Situated in the suburbs of Christchurch, the University of Canterbury campus is quite spacious and sprawls across 76 hectares of land and houses lecture theatres, staff accommodations, well-equipped labs and libraries. Previously, it was situated in the centre of the city of Christchurch, where the Christchurch Arts Centre is situated today, for nearly 100 years. The links to the old site have been preserved as the graduate ceremony of UC commences at the Arts Centre.
