The university is located in the beautiful mountainous city of Reno, with a population of around 450,000 people. Just 40 minutes from Lake Tahoe and four hours drive from San Francisco. Reno is ideally located for enjoying and exploring the West. The University has off-campus and on-campus housing available with comprehensive meal plans, and there are many opportunities for students to engage in enrichment experiences. Financial Assistance
Nevada provides high quality education at competitive price with a variety of funding opportunities. Graduate students often receive graduate assistantships from academic departments.
- Graduate assistantships are valued at over $28,300 and include a monthly stipend of $1,400, a per credit grant-in-aid, health insurance, and in-state resident status for tuition purposes
- International Awards are offered to international undergraduate students; competitive application process is directed at students currently enrolled
- The Graduate Student Association offers $500 travel grants for conferences in the US, Mexico, and Canada or a maximum of $750 in travel assistance for all other international travel per year to attend conferences and complete field work. Research grants of up to $2,500, computer loans of up to $1,500, and emergency loans for $500 for international graduate students

Beyond the university, the Reno-Sparks area lies prominently in an attractive natural setting. It is bounded on the west by the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains and on the east by the rolling basin and range province. Recreational activities are easy to find, as students can drive to the famed ski areas of Lake Tahoe and the historic Western realm of Virginia City all in one day.
Within a short drive of the campus, you will find more than 25 world-class alpine and nordic ski resorts and the spectacular Tahoe Rim Trail that offers hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The university's first building, Morrill Hall (completed in 1887), still stands at the campus' southern end. Lincoln Hall (all-male dormitory) and Manzanita Hall (all-female dormitory) were both completed in 1896, making them the oldest residence halls west of the Mississippi River.
Across the campus of the university exists the University of Nevada, Reno Arboretum, which was established in 1985, contains a collection of trees, shrubs, flowers, ornamentals and native flora, including over 60 genera and about 200 species of trees, many with several cultivars present. Thirty-six mature elm trees line the Quad.
The campus contains a statue of John William Mackay (namesake of Nevada's Mackay School of Mines, later renamed the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering.
The campus also has Child Care near University, Campus Dining Locations, Parking and Transportation Services, Office of International Students & Scholars, Professional Development and Training Resources, Research Centers, Institutes and Facilities and University Police Services.
