University of Pennsylvania - Main Campus

University of Pennsylvania (Penn) traces its origins to 1740 when a trust was formed to establish the Charity School of Philadelphia. Penn is located in Philadelphia. Over the last decade, Philadelphia has experienced an expansive urban renaissance. Philadelphia has a reputation as one of the most livable cities in the country. Penn's heritage is likewise reflected in its environs, which include many notable landmarks. These make the experience of education worthwhile at Penn.

Some of these are Houston Hall, the nation's first student union; the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, one of the finest museums of its kind in the country; Franklin Field, the oldest collegiate football field still in use and the country's first double-decked college stadium.

Philadelphia is home to important arts and cultural treasures. The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Rodin Museum, featuring the largest collection of Rodin's works outside France, provide extensive resources for scholars in the arts and humanities. The Barnes Foundation includes a celebrated collection of French Impressionist paintings, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts houses important American paintings and sculptures.

Among Philadelphia's outdoor attractions is Fairmount Park, the largest urban park system in the United States, with five major parks located throughout the city- each offering a variety of recreational facilities. Philadelphia is also a city of sports lovers, and is home to professional teams. Penn has acquired resources which are being developed for expanded educational, research, biomedical, and mixed-use facilities over the next ten years.

With its green lawns and landmark architecture, the beautiful West Philadelphia campus houses all of Penn's activities, from student life, athletics, and academics to research, scholarship, and cultural life. All of Penn's 12 schools are located within walking distance of one another. This geographical unity, unique among Ivy League schools, supports and fosters Penn's interdisciplinary approach to education, scholarship, and research.

The University Museum, as it is commonly called, was founded in 1887. During the early twentieth century Museum conducted some of the first and most important archaeological and anthropological expeditions to Egypt, Mesopotamia, Africa, East Asia and South America, thus the collection includes a very large number of antiquities from ancient Egypt and the Middle East. The Museum also has a strong collection of Chinese artifacts. The Institute of Contemporary Art based on Penn's campus, showcases various exhibitions of art throughout the year.
