The University of Sussex was established in 1961 and is one of the top ranking universities in the world. It houses some of the best research centers in the disciplines of Engineering, Medicine and Biological Sciences. In fact, one-fifth of the total university income is generated through its research activity. Besides technology and science, the university is also very well known for its excellence in the fields of arts and humanities. In fact, the main university library is the proud owner of the original manuscripts and letters of Virginia Woolf.

A number of Noble Prize winners and Fellows of Royal Society can be counted among its faculty. In the 2005 GAURDIAN RATINGS, the Electronic Engineering department was ranked 2nd and the Mechanical Engineering department was ranked 5th in the UK. The University of Sussex is considered as a front runner in the field of research and works with the top names in the automotive sector, such as Ford, Toyota and Rolls Royce. The university was credited with the design of the Concorde gas turbine based Rolls Royce engine for the British Airways and Air France. It’s Electronic and Communication department works in tandem with big names in the IT sector that includes Intel. Recently, the department was involved in the instrumentation work for NASA’s Mars expedition. All testing procedures were done in the campus workshop of NASA.

The department of Biological Sciences also has a £25 million Genome Repair and Stability Center. One unique feature of this department is that it allows Masters course students to deal directly with radioactive matter and research.

As the university is equally well known in the domain of Arts and Humanities, it offers a variety of interdisciplinary courses that range from Human Rights to Sociology, Gender Studies to Psychology, International Management to Media and Film Studies among others. Its department of International Relations and Development Studies is considered to be among the best in the world.

University of Sussex- Main Campus

The Sussex University is situated in Brighton, United Kingdom and was designed by Sir Basil Spence. The campus is conveniently located and easily accessible from any part of the country. The infrastructure is beautifully designed to enhance the beauty which surrounds it. The design of the building has acquired tremendous appreciation since time immemorial and the gatehouse inspired Falmer House even won a bronze medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects. The Meeting House, another campus building, won the Civic Trust award in 1969 and in 1993, the buildings which made up the foremost of Sir Basil Spence's designs were provided listed building status, with Falmer House being one of only two buildings to be given a Grade 1 status of exceptional interest. The Meeting House caters to quench the religious needs of the student body and the construction of that building was part of the initial plan for the University of Sussex and only possible due to a donation from both Sir and Lady Caffyn. The building, which begun in 1965 and completed in 1966, is 80 feet in diameter and contains a seating area for 350 people.

The University's Arts building has a striking tangible entrance imitating a set of rugby union goalposts.The Falmer House is constructed in the shape of a camera, with the two protruding concrete appendages representing the flash, and the cylindrical object to the left the flash. From an aerial view, the campus itself has the appearance of a sitting cat, which can be seen on copies of the campus map.

Another of Basil Spence's designs, the Gardner Arts Centre, was opened in 1969 as the first university campus arts centre and had a 480 seat purpose built theatre, a visual art gallery and studio space. It was regularly used for theatre and dance as well as showing a variety of films on a modern cinema screen. All such facilities are aimed to cater to the students' gratification and recreation. The other important facilities that the students cav easily avail of within the University campus are - well equipped library, highly advanced computer lab with internet connectivity, hostel facilities, canteen and so on.
