M.Sc in Physics

Course Description

:

The M.Sc. Physics degree, allots credits to students. students must choose courses amounting to a total of 90 credits during the year, in order to obtain sufficient coursework credits for the programme. Students opt for specialisation courses. This is supported by an extensive programme of research seminars by internal and external speakers. The supervised research project is the major focus of the course study. Students choose the project early in the academic year and work on it in parallel with the lecture courses. Not all courses run every year. The detailed course curriculum for each term is as follows:

Autumn term: Atom-Light Interactions; Atomic Structure and Angular Momentum; Condensed State Physics I; Cosmology; Data Analysis Techniques; Further Quantum Mechanics; General Relativity; Nuclear and Particle Physics I; Quantum Mechanical Models of Solids; Relativistic Quantum Fields I.

Spring term: Advanced Particle Physics; Condensed State Physics II; Computer Simulations in Physics; Early Universe I; Early Universe II; Galactic Structure; Introduction to C; Nanomagnetism; Nuclear and Particle Physics II; Quantum Optics and Applied Quantum Field Theory; Relativistic Quantum Fields II; Symmetry, Geometry and Topology; Space Plasma Physics; Computer Simulations in Physics; Stellar Structure; Phenomenology of the Standard Model and the MSSM; and The Distant Universe.

Summer term: Beyond the Standard Model I; Beyond the Standard Model II; Theory of Bose-Einstein Condensation.

Entry Requirements

Students from all over the world can apply for procuring admission to this course at the Sussex University. An overseas graduate need to provide a copy of his/her degree transcripts (breakdown of his/her degree results) with his/her application. A translation into English should also have to be provided if necessary. The various eligibility requirements for the candidates are as follows:

  • Should have a good command of written and spoken English to complete a postgraduate degree in the UK.
