Launched in 1988, as a result of a merger of the former NSW Institute of Technology, UTS is a University focused on practice-oriented education with a strong commitment towards globalisation. The mission of UTS focuses on the provision of higher education with an international focus that enhances professional practice, serves the community and enables students to reach their full potential. There are also ongoing collaborations with Indigenous people. The University also promotes international student mobility, and conducts high quality collaborative research in niche areas. This is manifested through: extensive use of industry practitioners for teaching; student learning in the workplace; and successful research and teaching partnerships and projects with industry. UTS is a member of the Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN). The depth and quality of researchers has been seeing a steady growth, well supported by a large research student population.
