Vancouver Island University,formerly known as Malaspina University-College was established in 1969.It is a public, degree-granting Institution that offers both University and College programs. The University is attended by over 10,000 full-time Canadian students, and 1,000 international students from more than 50 countries. VIU has formal ties and exchange programs with international institutions in countries such as Australia, China, England, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Thailand and the United States of America.
The University has been active in International education for many years, offering a successful English Language Program that helps International students prepare for academic programs. VIU International Education has an established ‘Internationalisation’ strategy that includes:

Nanaimo Campus
Nanaimo is a city of 80,000 residents, located on beautiful Vancouver Island — a tourist destination blessed with the natural beauty of mountains, forests and seashore, a mild climate, and many opportunities for year-round outdoor sports and recreation. Features of the campus include a 300-seat theatre; library; gymnasium; art studios; labs; wellequipped mechanic and welding shop facilities; modern, newly expanded student residences; picturesque Japanese garden and more.
Located at the centre of the Nanaimo campus, the Quad is the students' favourite gathering place comprising a lovely courtyard of flowers, shrubs and lawn surrounded by buildings housing the Library, Cafeteria/Administration, Math/Physics, the Theatre, and the all-important Jumping Java coffee hut.
Malaspina University-College’s Library has grown to suit the rapidly changing
face of education at Malaspina today. The five-storey Applied Studies Training
and Educational Centre (ASTEC) houses Malaspina’s Faculty of Health & Human
Services and programs such as Nursing and Dental Assisting, Child and Youth
Care, Early Childhood Education and Care. The centre also contains
administrative offices for the Faculty of Trades & Applied Technology, and
Information Technology and Applied Business Technology programs.
The Lobby- called the Welcome Centre, houses the Switchboard and
Parking/Security office. A gymnasium houses a safety-first, health promotion
facility located on the lower campus. The facility is 20,000 sq. ft. in size and
offers a variety of activities to maintain the campus's fitness level.
