Course Name

:

Midwifery

Course Description

:

This three-year programme prepares you to provide midwifery care for women in a variety of settings. A qualified midwife is able to give the necessary supervision, care, and advice to women prior to, and during pregnancy, birth, and the period afterwards.

Following changes in the 1990 Nurses Amendment Act, registered midwives in New Zealand are recognised as autonomous practitioners, who may take on the independent role of self-employed midwives. Alternatively midwives may be lead maternity carers, pursue work in community practices or be employed in a hospital. The degree is designed to allow entry to undergraduates, registered nurses, and registered midwives. Entry is as a full time student; there is no part-time option available.

If you are already registered as a nurse or registered midwife, you will receive Transfer of Credits, depending on your nursing/midwifery registration and previous qualifications. Academic counselling is provided to ensure your programme of study will meet your individual circumstances. Though normally a three year degree, this programme must be completed within the maximum of four years from commencement, as prescribed by the Midwifery Council of New Zealand. This programme may also be studied with Tihei Mauri Ora (TMO) support. TMO is an option to study in a culturally supportive environment for those who identify as Maori or Pacific Island. You need to meet the same selection criteria and learning outcomes as other students in the programme.
