Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University” (NovSU) was founded in the year 1993 through the merger of two of the oldest higher education institutions in the Veliky Novgorod region, namely, the Pedagogical and the Polytechnical Institutes. After a period of time, even the Novgorod Agricultural Academy was incorporated within the structure of the University.
The university was named after Prince Yaroslav, who in the year 1030 came to Novgorod to educate the priests and children. All activities are regulated by the legislative and normative acts of Ministry of education and Science of Russian Federation. Set up under the aegis of the Government of the Russian Federation, NovSU is one of the most prominent higher education institutes in the entire area of Novgorod.

Additionally, NovSU is equipped with a Research Centre, Marketing Centre, Science Library, Centre for New Information Technologies, Press Centre, Innovation Department, and a Publishing Centre.
The establishment of NovSU served the purpose of incorporating the expertise in research and training of natural sciences, culture, humanities and various such fields at Masters and other advanced levels of studies.
