BITSAT is a computer-based online entrance test for the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani. BITS, a deemed university, is an all-India Institute for advance education. It awards it own degrees. The Institute grants admission for its Integrated First Degree programs on the basis of BITSAT. The BITSAT is common for the Pilani and Goa campus of BITS.

BITSAT Pattern

The BITSAT consists of 150 questions. It is an objective test with each question carrying 4 options. For every correct answer you would get 3 marks. Every incorrect answer would lead to a negative marking of 1 mark. The duration of the test is 3 hours.

Ideally the admission for BITSAT closes by the end of January. BITSAT is generally conducted in the month of May or June.

BITSAT Eligibility Criteria

• You should have successfully cleared your 12th standard examination (10+2) from a recognised state/Central board with subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or an equivalent qualification
• It is also essential for you to be proficient in English language
• At least 80 % average marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in 12th standard and minimum 60% marks in each of these subjects
• Even if you are appearing for your 12th board exam, you are still eligible to sit for BITSAT
• If you have passed in the year 2008 and are intending to give the BITSAT in the year 2009, you are still eligible to apply, provided that you explain the gap

It should be noted that admission to the Birla Institute of Technology and Science would be granted purely on the basis of the BITSAT score.

If you are a first rank student of any Central or State board examination, you would be allotted direction to BITS irrespective of your BITSAT score. The eligibility requirement of minimum marks of PCM in the 12th standard, however, still holds.

For becoming eligible for direct admission it is essential that you should be from science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects.

There are 2 methods of registering-

• Online Registration-
  • Complete the BITSAT application form online and take out a print out from this website- http://www.bitsadmission.com/BITSAT/
  • Send the form along with the application fees (mentioned above) to Admissions Officer, BITS, Pilani – 333 031
• Postal Registration-
  • Send a request for the BITSAT application form on a plain sheet of paper mentioning your name and gender along with your complete postal address. Attach a demand draft for the prescribed fees along with it
  • You will receive the form through speed or registered post
  • Drafts should be drawn in favour of “Birla Institute of Technology & Science” payable at State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, Pilani (Code: 10398); or UCO Bank, Vidya Vihar, Pilani (Code: 0150); State Bank of India, Zuari Nagar, Goa (code: 1976)

Tips and Strategies

BITSAT score is the main and only criteria for attaining admission in the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani. Intelligent studying is the key to getting good scores. Read on to find out more.

• It is essential to cover only the prescribed syllabus. More the time you spend on studying outside the syllabus, the more time you may be wasting on questions that might not even be included in the final BITSAT
• Since the test is computer based, you should have at least a working knowledge of the same
• It is a good idea to start by revising your 11th and 12th standard NCERT syllabus for mathematics, physics and chemistry
• For additional preparation you can also rely on numerous reference books easily available in the market. Stick to the ones recommended by other students who have already studied from them
• Reference books should provide you with a wide variety of multiply choice questions, covering the entire syllabus
• Don’t rush into taking mock BITSAT’s. You should cover the entire syllabus once and practice from reference books at least 2-3 times before attempting the preparation test for BITSAT
• You should be thorough with basic concepts and formulaes
• You are not allowed to use a calculator for solving mathematical questions. It is, thus, important to brush up on your calculation skills
• Study from a good quality study material for the reasoning section of BITSAT. Try to devote a specific amount of time to the preparation of this section daily, as you might not have studied reasoning in your 11th or 12th standard
• At the time of the exam, start with the section you are most confident about
• As there is a negative marking of 1 marks for every incorrect answer, try to avoid wild guessing. However, a calculated guess will not do too much harm. Remove the option which is least likely to be correct. Guessing from 3 options would obviously reduce the risk factor a great deal
• Time management can help you succeed in BITSAT. Allocate a specific time to every section and try to complete the section within that time frame
•  Don’t get stuck at one question. If you are getting confused and are unable to find the right answer, skip the question
